Cliftonville Celebrities

On going through the archive, of many photos taken at the market over the last twenty two and a half years, I was reminded of a few famous people who have visited the market over the years.

The photo is of Timothy Spall, with his mother Sylvia, who lived opposite the market and Fraser Chadband, selling him a farmer’s market bag.

Timothy Spall is a famous actor who appeared for many years as Barry in Auf Wiedersehen Pet, as the artist JMW Turner, in the film Mr.Turner, in Harry Potter films and many, many other roles.

It was a pleasure to welcome him and his mother to the market. Sylvia often used to shop with us.

Another from our archive, our second famous celebrity, We used to get our bread from Paul Hollywood, whose business was in Canterbury at that time.

His stall was manned by one of Pauls staff, a really lovely man. It introduced me and many others, to delicious sour dough bread, croissants and scrumptious pastries. They always ‘sold out’

Paul occasionally came himself to the market to sell and as you can see by the photo, on this occasion he was show casing his book. We were sorry to lose him to The Great British Bake Off. Fame called!

He was a really friendly person, who was lovely to the shoppers. We are very proud that he was a part of our multi award winning market for a few years.
